The VW Transporter T7 is the newest generation of classic camper base van. We convert it into a full campervan in two designs, the Mandalay and the Chamonix, on whichever drivetrain suits you: full electric, plug-in hybrid, or diesel. The T7 gives you more space than our VW ID Buzz or Caddy Maxi, with a 200Ah lithium electrical system and a pop-top included as standard, and off-grid heating, solar power and extra windows available as options.

The same van as the Ford Transit Custom

If you’ve been looking at Ford Transit Custom campervans, it’s worth knowing that the VW Transporter T7 and the Ford Transit Custom are the same van, built on one platform through a Ford and VW partnership. From the windscreen back they are essentially identical: same body, same interior dimensions, same powertrains. The differences are cosmetic, the grilles, badges and dashboard styling. We convert both, the conversion is identical, and you can pick whichever badge and deal suits you.

New-vehicle prices are indicative and set by Volkswagen. The fully electric eTransporter may qualify for the £5,000 Plug-in Van Grant; ask us for current eligibility. We can convert the Ford-badged versions too.

Why T7 Transporter

The T7 is a compact mid-size campervan, still usable as an everyday vehicle but with room for a full side kitchen, a fixed double bed, generous storage and standing headroom under the pop-top.

Built on the Ford Transit Custom platform, the T7 has modern chassis dynamics, a refined ride and the latest safety and driver-assist tech. It’s comfortable for daily use and long-distance touring alike.

A serious electrical system as standard

Every Sunbox T7 conversion comes with a 200Ah lithium battery and Victron battery-to-battery and mains charging as standard. It’s hand-built by our craftspeople with FSC-certified ply & solid wood. Solar, off-grid heating & extra windows are available as options, so you only pay for what you’ll use.

Choose your roof and bed package

On the Mandalay you choose between two roof-and-bed packages. The conversion is identical; the difference is the pop-top roof and the rock and roll bed.

Two pop-top roofs to choose from. The Drivelodge is British made, and the Reimo V710 is German engineered. Both are quality roofs, priced separately from the conversion, so you only pay for the one you want.

How our pricing works

Each design has one base conversion price that buys a complete campervan conversion, ready to camp, including the pop-top, a 200Ah lithium system with Victron charging, the hand-built kitchen and the full interior. You then add only the extra options you want (off-grid heating, solar, extra windows), and buy the base vehicle separately in your choice of drivetrain. So your total is conversion + any extras + vehicle.

The five-year Sunbox warranty covers our conversion workmanship and the parts we build and fit ourselves: the furniture, insulation, lining, flooring and the wiring we install. Bought-in items keep their own manufacturer warranties. Appliances are typically covered for 24 months, and the pop-top by its maker. Lifetime support comes as standard: we’re a small business and we want you to enjoy your van, so get in touch any time something comes up.

Is the VW Transporter T7 the same as the Ford Transit Custom?

Yes. They share one platform through a Ford and VW partnership.

Which drivetrain should I choose?

Electric (eTransporter) suits you if you have home charging and want zero-emission driving with around 200 miles of range. Hybrid (eHybrid, or the Ford PHEV available now) gives you electric around town and petrol for the long runs, with no range anxiety. Diesel is the cheapest, has the longest range and the deepest used market. The same conversion goes on all three.

How much does it cost?

The Mandalay conversion is from £27,357 inc VAT (Value roof-and-bed package) or £30,957 (Premium), and the Chamonix from £27,357, conversion only, with the pop-top, the 200Ah lithium system, curtains and the full interior included. Off-grid heating (£1,680), solar (£960) and extra windows (£320 to £390 each) are added as options; a build with all three comes to £30,707 (Value) or £34,307 (Premium) for the conversion. The base vehicle is separate and depends on your drivetrain (from around £31,000 for a diesel, or around £32,400 used for the electric).

Is the VW eHybrid available yet?

VW has indicated the eHybrid arrives in 2026. The same plug-in hybrid is available now as the Ford Transit Custom PHEV, so you don’t have to wait if hybrid is what you want.

What's the difference between Mandalay and Chamonix?

The Mandalay has a crash-tested rock and roll bed on rails with up to five belted seats, three front and two rear. The Chamonix has a double slat bed with three belted seats in the front only and a more open rear.

How is it heated?

Heating is an optional extra, and you choose between a Propex gas airblow heater (£1,680) or a Webasto diesel air heater. Both run off-grid without draining your leisure battery.
