VW Caddy Maxi PHEV Conversion

VW Caddy Maxi Campervan Conversion – eHybrid

The VW Caddy Maxi Campervan Conversion has been our iconic micro campervan since the early days. The VW Caddy Maxi was our first love. Some of our team were converting these vans into beautiful micro campers before anyone else in the UK over seven years ago. Since then, we’ve refined our designs through dozens of builds, learning what works in this uniquely compact space. Now we’re working on the latest version of the model – the VW Caddy Maxi eHybrid model.

Up to 74 miles of electric range for your daily life. A petrol engine for longer adventures. And all the functionality that makes our Caddy conversions special pop-top roof, up to 4 belted seats, off-grid gas heating for year-round camping.

The Caddy Maxi eHybrid campervan conversion is a fantastic home-on-wheels, that also works as your everyday vehicle. Commuting on electric. Then Scotland, France, wherever – the petrol engine takes over seamlessly.

At Sunbox Campers, we build beautiful campervans by hand. More atelier than factory. Every Caddy Maxi eHybrid campervan we create is crafted by skilled joiners at our East Sussex workshop, using sustainable materials and finished to your specification.

Why the VW Caddy Maxi Campervan Conversion?

The UK’s Original Caddy Conversion Specialists

Some of our team have been building Caddy Maxi campervans longer than anyone else in the UK. Seven years of refining layouts, solving problems, and understanding exactly what works in this compact space. When you choose Sunbox for your Caddy conversion, you’re getting that accumulated expertise.

Electric Daily Driving, Petrol Adventures

The eHybrid’s 19.7kWh battery delivers up to 74 miles of pure electric range enough for most daily driving without touching petrol. Charge overnight at home, and your commute, errands, and local exploring happen on quiet, smooth electric power. When you’re heading further afield, the 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine takes over. No range anxiety. No planning around charging infrastructure. Just go.

Everything a Campervan Should Be

Unlike some compact campervans, the Caddy Maxi eHybrid can have it all:

  • Pop-top roof for standing room and up to 4-berth sleeping
  • Up to 4 belted seats with our Mandalay rock and roll bed (2 front + 2 rear)
  • Off-grid gas heating for year-round adventures essential for UK camping
  • Full kitchen with gas hob, sink, and fridge

Plug-in Van Grant Eligible

The VW Caddy Maxi Campervan Conversion qualifies for the UK government’s Plug-in Van Grant because its electric range exceeds 60 miles. The grant is applied automatically at point of sale by the dealer check with your dealer for current grant amounts and eligibility for specific variants.

Parks Anywhere, Drives Like a Car

At 4.85m long, the Caddy Maxi fits in standard parking spaces, multi-storeys, and down narrow lanes. Built on VW’s MQB platform (the same architecture as the Golf), it handles like a large hatchback light steering, easy parking, comfortable on motorways. Most owners use it as their only vehicle.

Two Designs for the VW Caddy Maxi Campervan Conversion

We offer two proven designs, each with a different bed and seating configuration. Both include the same quality of craftsmanship, materials, and finish the same hand-built furniture, the same sustainable materials, the same attention to detail.

Mandalay

Add a pop-top roof and you have genuine 4-berth capability: two adults downstairs, two more in the roof bed.

Off-Grid Gas Heating

For year-round camping in the UK, we recommend adding Propex gas heating to your Caddy Maxi conversion.

The Propex heater runs from a small refillable gas bottle, providing reliable warmth without draining your leisure battery. It’s the difference between camping comfortably in Scotland in February and being limited to summer adventures.

Gas heating works anywhere no hook-up required, no reliance on campsites. If off-grid capability matters to you, this is essential.

The Sunbox Quality

At Sunbox Campers, we build beautiful campervans by hand more atelier than factory. Every Caddy Maxi conversion is crafted by skilled joiners at our East Sussex workshop using sustainable materials.

Handcrafted Interiors

Our vans feature hand-built wooden furniture throughout. No flat-pack, no shortcuts. Skilled carpenters create solid wood worktops, cabinets, and tables that are built to last and lovely to live with.

Sustainable Materials

We use FSC-certified wood, Thermafleece natural insulation (sheep’s wool for superior thermal and acoustic performance), and quality fabrics including Chieftain Earthly (100% recycled) for customers who want them. Sustainability matters to us we believe you can build beautiful campervans without compromising on environmental responsibility.

Your Personal Touch

Every conversion includes choices that make it yours:

  • Flooring: Style and colour from our Polyflor range
  • Upholstery: Fabric from our curated selection
  • Wood finish: Multiple stain and treatment options
  • Interior lining: Carpet or wood in various colours
  • Curtains: Blackout curtains in your choice of colour

When you join our build queue, you’ll receive access to our full range of options so you can make informed decisions about your campervan’s interior.

Why the Caddy Over the Ford Transit Connect?

The Ford Transit Connect and VW Caddy share the same platform VW developed it, and Ford rebadges it under their partnership. Same engines, same hybrid system, same gearbox, built at the same VW plant in Poland.

We recommend the Caddy because:

  • It’s VW’s own technology VW dealers know it inside out
  • We’re Caddy specialists some of our team have seven years’ experience on this platform
  • The Caddy is actually cheaper £28,435 vs £29,200 (ex VAT)

The simple rule: go with whoever developed the platform. For this van, that’s VW.

Already Own a Caddy Maxi?

If you already have a Caddy Maxi petrol, diesel, or eHybrid we’re happy to convert it. The conversion process is identical across all variants.

Vehicle Sourcing

We can help source your Caddy Maxi eHybrid. We know what to look for in specification, condition, fair pricing and can guide you through the process.

Or source your own. Many customers find their own vehicle and bring it to us for conversion. We’re happy to advise on what to look for, even if you’re buying elsewhere.

What to look for:

  • Maxi (long wheelbase) only we don’t convert the standard short-wheelbase Caddy
  • Full service history especially important for used vehicles
  • Panel van or Kombi variant both work well for conversion

The Conversion Process

1. Consultation

We discuss your needs, budget, and how you’ll use the camper. This helps us recommend the right design and options for your situation.

2. Base Vehicle

Either we help source your Caddy Maxi, or you bring us a van you’ve found yourself.

3. Design Choices

You select your flooring, upholstery, wood finish, lining, and curtains from our range of options. This is where your campervan starts to feel like yours.

4. Build

Our skilled craftspeople convert your van at our Newhaven workshop. Build time depends on specification and current order book – we’ll give you realistic timelines from the start.

5. Handover

Comprehensive walkthrough of all systems, handover documentation, and the keys to your new campervan.

Warranty and Aftercare

Conversion warranty: 24-month warranty on our conversion (workmanship and installed components)

Vehicle warranty: The base vehicle retains VW’s manufacturer warranty 3 years / 60,000 miles on new vehicles, plus 8 years on the high-voltage battery.

What you can expect from us:

  • Comprehensive handover with full walkthrough of all systems
  • Ongoing support we’re here to help long after your van leaves our workshop

We’d rather build a relationship than make a sale. Many of our customers stay in touch, share their adventures, and come back when they’re ready for their next van.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a complete Caddy Maxi eHybrid campervan cost?

Conversions start from £20,399 inc VAT for both Mandalay and Chamonix designs. New base vehicles start from around £30,500 ex VAT. A complete converted campervan therefore starts from around £55,000-£60,000 inc VAT depending on specification. The Plug-in Van Grant may reduce the base vehicle cost – check with your dealer.

Does it qualify for the Plug-in Van Grant?

Yes. The Caddy Maxi eHybrid is listed as an eligible vehicle on GOV.UK. The grant is applied at point of sale – check with your dealer for current amounts.

What’s the real-world electric range?

VW’s official WLTP figure is 73-74 miles. Real-world range varies with temperature, driving style, and load – expect 50-65 miles in typical UK conditions. That’s enough for most daily driving to happen on electric alone.

Can you install gas heating?

Yes, we fit Propex gas heaters for reliable off-grid warmth. This is one of the Caddy’s strengths as a campervan platform.

What’s the difference between Mandalay and Chamonix?

Mandalay has a rock and roll bed (converts from seats to bed) with up to 4 belted seats two in the front, two in the rear. Chamonix has a double slat bed with 2 belted seats in the front only. Both have the same quality, same craftsmanship, same pop-top roof option.

Why Caddy Maxi and not standard Caddy?

We only convert the Maxi (long wheelbase). The extra length is essential for a proper pop-top roof, rock and roll bed, and liveable interior.

Can you convert a petrol or diesel Caddy Maxi?

Yes, the conversion is identical. We’re happy to convert any Caddy Maxi variant.

How long does a conversion take?

Build time depends on specification and our current order book. We’ll give you realistic timelines during consultation – typically several weeks from vehicle arrival to handover.

Considering Other Options?

VW ID Buzz Our fully electric micro camper with iconic design. Comparable size to the Caddy, with best-in-class electric range and that unmistakable silhouette. A different approach to electrified camping.

Fiat e-Scudo Our most versatile electric campervan. Larger than the Caddy, with off-grid gas heating capability and up to 4-berth sleeping. Great for families.

Ford Transit Custom PHEV Our medium PHEV campervan. More space than the Caddy, Ford’s platform and hybrid system. Makes sense if you need the extra room.
