VW ID Buzz Conversion

The VW ID Buzz is the icon. That unmistakable silhouette, the T2-inspired styling, the sense of optimism it brings — there’s something about this van that goes beyond specifications. At Sunbox Campers, we’ve been offering VW ID Buzz Conversions since the vehicle arrived in the UK.

It also happens to be an excellent electric campervan. Best-in-class range for weekend adventures without charging stops, the fastest charging of any van we convert, and that distinctive design that turns heads wherever you go.

Our ID Buzz conversions have featured in Top Gear, Car Magazine, and on the official Volkswagen website. We know this platform intimately — the layouts that work, the electrical systems it needs, and how to make the most of its unique character.

We source vehicles through selected VW main dealers and can help you find either a new or quality used ID Buzz Cargo to convert.

Why the VW ID Buzz?

Iconic Design, Reimagined

The ID Buzz brings the spirit of the classic VW T2 into the electric age. It’s a design that creates an emotional response — both for you driving it and everyone who sees you. There’s genuine joy in owning something this distinctive.

Best Range of Any Van We Convert

The 79kWh battery delivers 180-230 miles of real-world range — more than the e-Scudo or e-Transporter. Most weekend trips happen without needing to charge at all. When you do charge, the ID Buzz is fast: around 30 minutes from 10-80% at a rapid charger.

VW Campervan Heritage

Volkswagen invented the campervan with the original T2 Splitscreen. The ID Buzz continues that legacy — modern technology wrapped in a design that honours decades of VW camping adventures.

Compact but Capable

At 4.7m long, the ID Buzz sits between the VW Caddy and Transporter in size. It’s nimble enough for everyday driving and city streets, yet spacious enough for proper campervan living. The electric drivetrain means instant torque and a genuinely enjoyable driving experience.

An award winning vehicle

The ID Buzz has won numerous awards, including Top Gear Electric Car of the Year, What Car? Car of the Year, and GQ Car Awards.

Designs for the ID Buzz

We convert the VW ID Buzz Cargo (SWB) — the panel van version with three front seats and an open loadspace behind. We don’t convert the ID Buzz Life (passenger version) or the LWB version.

We offer two options: the standard E-Chamonix, and the E-Chamonix with Horizon Pop-Top Roof for those who want standing room and additional sleeping space.

E-Chamonix

ID Buzz with conversion

Double slat bed with induction cooking

From £20,399 inc VAT

The E-Chamonix is our established design for the ID Buzz. It features a double slat bed, fully-equipped kitchen with induction hob, and all the essentials for comfortable camping.

E-Chamonix includes:

  • Double slat bed (2-berth)
  • 2 or 3 belted seats (front only, depending on configuration)
  • Hand-built wooden furniture in your choice of finish
  • Solid wood worktops and removable table
  • Natural fibre insulation and carpet lining
  • Luxury upholstery in your choice of fabric
  • Blackout curtains in your choice of colour
  • Vinyl flooring in your choice of style
  • Leisure battery and battery-to-battery charging system
  • USB/USB-C and 240V sockets
  • LED lighting throughout
  • Water tank and stainless steel sink
  • Fridge
  • Induction hob

Optional extras: Horizon pop-top roof (see below), solar panels, windows (up to 4), portaloo

E-Chamonix with Horizon Pop-Top Roof

Up to 4-berth sleeping with elevated roof and standing room

From £26,894 inc VAT (E-Chamonix + Horizon roof)

The Horizon ID Buzz Edition is the world’s first low-profile pop-top designed specifically for this vehicle. It transforms your ID Buzz into a campervan with standing room inside and additional sleeping space in the roof.

Why the Horizon roof?

With just 30mm added height when closed, the Horizon maintains the Buzz’s distinctive silhouette. There’s zero wind noise, and the minimal added height means your driving range isn’t affected. When elevated, you get 6ft 2″ standing room at the rear — a significant upgrade for living comfort.

Horizon Pop-Top Roof features:

  • World’s first low-profile pop-top for the ID Buzz
  • Aircraft-grade aluminium frame with strong hinges
  • Just 30mm above factory roofline when closed
  • 6ft 2″ standing room at rear with roof elevated
  • 2-berth bi-fold bed (2.1m length)
  • Colour-coded to match your vehicle (included)
  • Polished hinges, black tweed interior, Scenic canvas
  • Carpet-trimmed interior

Roof price: £6,495 inc VAT

Optional roof extras:

  • Bi-fold roof bed upgrade: +£495 inc VAT
  • Metallic paint colour code: +£195 inc VAT
  • Coloured canvas: +£295 inc VAT

Sleeping capacity: The pop-top roof adds a 2-berth sleeping area above. Combined with the double slat bed below, you have up to 4 sleeping berths — though realistically this works best as 2-3 roomy berths, or a cosy 4-berth for families with children. This is a compact van, and four adults would be snug.

Windows

The ID Buzz Cargo comes as a panel van, but we can add windows to transform the feel of the interior and bring in natural light.

Side windows: Up to 2 per side — £320 each inc VAT

Heating the VW ID Buzz: A Different Approach

Here’s something important to understand about the ID Buzz: we cannot install gas heating.

The ID Buzz chassis design doesn’t allow us to safely fit a gas system while maintaining the vehicle’s structural integrity and safety certifications. This is a genuine constraint, not something that can be worked around.

How ID Buzz owners stay warm:

  • Vehicle heating — The Buzz has an excellent built-in heating system. A 10-15 minute blast warms the cabin nicely. Just be mindful of your traction battery level.
  • Campsite hook-up — When connected to mains power, you can use a portable electric heater.
  • 12V electric blankets — Drawing just 3-5 amps, these keep you cosy in bed without draining your leisure battery.
  • Quality insulation — We install Thermafleece natural insulation in all our conversions.
  • Strategic planning — Many Buzz owners plan trips around campsite availability in winter, or embrace three-season camping.

Is this a dealbreaker? For some people, yes — if year-round off-grid winter camping is essential, consider the Fiat e-Scudo or VW e-Transporter instead, both of which can have gas heating installed. For many others, the Buzz’s approach works brilliantly.

Frequently Asked Questions about our VW ID Buzz Conversions

How much does a complete ID Buzz campervan cost?

E-Chamonix conversion starts from £20,399 inc VAT. Add the Horizon pop-top roof for £6,495 inc VAT. Base vehicles range from around £27,600 inc VAT (used) to £38,340+ inc VAT (new). A complete converted campervan therefore starts from around £48,000 inc VAT.

Can you install gas heating in the ID Buzz?

No — the chassis design doesn’t allow safe gas installation. ID Buzz owners use vehicle heating, campsite hook-up, and 12V electric blankets instead. This works well for three-season camping and campsite-based trips.

How many people can sleep in an ID Buzz camper?

Two in the standard E-Chamonix (double slat bed). With the Horizon pop-top roof, you can sleep up to four — though realistically this works best as 2-3 roomy berths, or a cosy 4-berth for families with children. It’s a compact van.

How many belted seats does the ID Buzz camper have?

Two or three, depending on the front seat configuration — all in the front. Unlike the e-Scudo, there are no rear belted seats in our ID Buzz conversions.

Do you convert the ID Buzz Life (passenger version)?

No — we only convert the ID Buzz Cargo (panel van). The Cargo version gives us a blank canvas to work with and the best layout options.

Do you convert the LWB ID Buzz?

No — we convert the SWB Cargo only. There is no LWB Cargo version available.

What’s the real-world range?

Expect 180-230 miles depending on driving style, weather, and load. The official WLTP figure is up to 276 miles, but real-world driving typically delivers less.

How long does a conversion take?

Build time depends on specification and our current order book. We’ll give you realistic timelines during consultation — typically several weeks from vehicle arrival to handover.
