Electric campervan conversion is still a new field. There’s no established playbook, limited real-world experience to draw from, and a lot of questions that don’t have easy answers yet.
We’ve been converting electric vans for several years now. We’ve worked with multiple platforms, solved the technical challenges (heating is the big one), and learned what actually works in practice.
The Fiat e-Scudo and VW ID Buzz are two of the electric vans we convert regularly. They’re quite different vehicles with different strengths. This comparison shares what we’ve learned about both – honest, practical information to help you make a good decision.

Which Electric Van Has Better Range: Fiat e-Scudo vs VW ID Buzz?
The ID Buzz has a larger battery (86kWh vs 75kWh) and delivers 180-230 miles in real-world driving. The e-Scudo typically achieves 170-180 miles.
The Buzz also charges faster, handling up to 200kW – getting from 10-80% in under half an hour. The e-Scudo’s maximum is 100kW, taking around 45 minutes for the same charge.
For most weekend trips (100-150 miles each way), both electric vans handle the journey comfortably. For longer touring, the Buzz offers more flexibility between charging stops.
How Does Interior Space Compare?
The e-Scudo is a commercial van platform, designed to maximise cargo space. It’s nearly 400mm wider inside (1,628mm vs 1,230mm) and offers more load length.
This translates to a roomier double bed and more space for storage and moving around. The e-Scudo also has more headroom in the main living area.
The ID Buzz has a more car-like interior – refined and well-designed, with a different feel to a traditional van conversion.

Can You Get Off-Grid Heating in an Electric Campervan?
This is one of the most important differences between these two vans.
Fiat e-Scudo: The commercial van chassis allows us to install a gas heating system (Propex) if you want one. This provides reliable off-grid heating and hot water from a small campingaz bottle, independent of your electrical system. You can also choose a fully electric setup if you prefer – the e-Scudo gives you the choice.
VW ID Buzz: The chassis design means gas heating cannot be installed. Buzz owners use a combination of approaches:
- The vehicle’s built-in heating system (draws from the traction battery)
- Campsite hook-up for electric heating
- 12V electric blankets for sleeping
- Quality insulation to retain heat
Both approaches work well – they suit different camping styles. If you want the option of off-grid heating for year-round camping, the e-Scudo gives you that flexibility. If you’re happy with three-season camping or campsite-based trips, both vans work brilliantly.

Which Electric Van is Better for Family Campervan Conversion?
For families, there are a few practical differences.
The e-Scudo’s rock ‘n’ roll bed converts to belted rear seats, so you can travel with four passengers – two in front, two in back. The wider interior also makes the sleeping space more comfortable when four people are staying in the van.
The ID Buzz in campervan configuration doesn’t offer belted rear seats in the same way. It works well for couples with occasional guests, or families where rear belted seats aren’t required.
Both vans can sleep four with a pop-top roof installed.
What’s the Driving Experience Like?
Both are electric vehicles, so both have that smooth, quiet, instant-torque experience that makes EVs genuinely enjoyable to drive. No gear changes, no engine noise, just effortless acceleration.
The ID Buzz adds the styling and heritage. That T2-inspired design turns heads everywhere, and there’s an emotional response to it that goes beyond specifications. It feels like driving something special.
The e-Scudo is more understated – it doesn’t draw attention the same way. But it’s a refined, comfortable drive with excellent visibility and that same EV smoothness. Some people prefer the lower-key presence.
How Much Does Each Van Cost?
The e-Scudo benefits from badge engineering – the same van is sold as the Citroën ë-Dispatch, Peugeot e-Expert, Vauxhall Vivaro Electric, and Toyota Proace Electric. This means a larger used market and more options when sourcing.
Typical used prices:
- e-Scudo / Stellantis variants: £18,000-£28,000
- ID Buzz: £28,000-£50,000+
Our campervan conversion costs are similar for both vehicles.
